Alaska – Untitled #131

In September 2024, Carrie and I took a cruise to Alaska. We took over 650 pictures (certainly could have taken many more), and divided the 29 we dedicated to our Etsy Shop into 6 groups: Out to Sea, At Sea/Mendenhall Glacier, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, Ketchikan, and Return to Vancouver.

This section, At Sea/Mendenhall Glacier, contains six pictures, Alaska – Untitled #126 through #131.

This portion of our cruise was highlighted by many hours of travel over the water as we made our way to Juneau, Alaska where we would take a brief excursion to the Mendenhall Glacier.

We took a bus from Juneau to the glacier. Regrettably, we were only able to stay forty minutes until we had to be back for our return trip to Juneau.

After a brief walk we came to this view of the Mendenhall Glacier. A careful look at the lake will show the rain drops hitting the surface. While rain was a constant companion during our cruise, it did not dampen our spirits in the least. Nothing could diminish the inherent beauty and grandeur of the many things we saw, experienced, and felt in harmony with during our adventure.

I’ve already tried to put views like this into words; I’ll let this picture speak for itself.

This view is but a slight variation on the themes of #127 and #128. Breathtaking and enchanting as I recall standing on the deck in the cold, my senses trying to take it all in.

Similar to #127, we were taken by the way the sun painted the otherwise grey clouds with touches of color.

One of the most amazing things, to me, as seen in this picture, was the way the sun, hidden behind the clouds and rain most of our trip, cast this orange/gold tint in the clouds and often reflected in the water. Here, there was a certain grandiosity to the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

This view shows several of the common elements we encountered whenever we sailed along the coast and the Inside Passage: clouds, mountains and hills, and the enchanting mists and fogs which adorned the land masses, big and small, all throughout our journeys.

This section, Out to Sea, contains three pictures, Alaska – Untitled #123, #124, and #125.

In this picture, the sun has set and we are left with a beautifully rendered sky portraying a palate of colors, the profile of the distant hills, the serenity of the sea, and the mystery of what the rest of our voyage would bring.

In this picture we see the sun setting behind the clouds and mountains in the distance, painting the sky, clouds, and water with its beautiful solar colors. Interestingly, it would be one of the last times we would see the sun on our seven-day voyage as the remainder was filled with clouds, mist, and rain, all of which offered a unique and splendid beauty shrouded, as it were, in mystery.

In this picture, Landscape Untitled #123, we find the elements of a recurring theme in many of the pictures taken during our trip: the waters of the ocean, bays, and what is called the Inside Passage, the hills and mountains, and the beautiful colors of the sky and clouds. This grouping of the three pictures were taken as the sun was setting. The temperature never got above 60 degrees and that particular evening, as we were sailing toward Juneau, Alaska, had a very strong headwind which added to the chill, my hands almost becoming numb as I handled the camera.

Landscape – Untitled #122

We have dubbed this tree the “Island Tree.” It grows on a tiny island in the middle of Lake Marmo in the Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois.

The story of that day is best understood by reading some or all of the “Stories Behind the Picture” of the other four pictures which we placed in our Esty Shop from that snow day in November 2023.

In addition to this picture, you can read about and see Abstract – Untitled #118, Landscape – Untitled #119, Landscape – Untitled #120, and Landscape – Untitled #121 on our website. This grouping of pictures best reflects to peaceful mood of that inspiring, snowy day.
