Alaska – Untitled #151

In September 2024, Carrie and I took a cruise to Alaska. We took over 650 pictures (certainly could have taken many more), and divided the 29 we dedicated to our Etsy Shop into 6 groups: Out to Sea, At Sea/Mendenhall Glacier, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, Ketchikan, and Return to Vancouver.

Our final group consists of Alaska – Untitled #148 through #151 and this narrative will serve all four pictures based on their similarity.

It was a very low, overcast sky. It was quite chilly and windy; uncomfortable for taking pictures but the views were compelling.

I was on the 17th deck, the highest available for guests, and to take these pictures I had to steady both my head and the camera against a radome (a radar dome) because of the high winds.

The sense of the sun filtering through the clouds in the image was ethereal and enchanting as we passed along the coast heading back to our point of disembarkation, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Alaska – Untitled #147

This single picture reflects our memory of Ketchikan. It rained the entire time we were there. An excursion we had planned was cancelled due to a storm coming in off the ocean. We sought the shelter of a nearby eatery, enjoyed fish, and returned to the ship quite tired from the activities of the preceding day.

Ketchikan is a lovely town nestled among the forests on the coast and I’m touched with a bit of nostalgia when I look at the masted boats having grown up in a small town with a coastline, docks, marinas, and masted sailing ships.

This is the fourth and largest group with ten pictures, Alaska – Untitled #137 through #146. During this leg of our actual voyage, we took a total of 317 pictures many of which were of the glacier at the terminus of the Johns Hopkins Inlet.

As we have stated before, the pictures tell the story better than words but we have added a few details simply to give some personal and geographical context. This summary will serve as our description of all ten pictures with the exception of #141, #142, #145, and #146 which give every brief added detail. This view, thanks again to the zoom lens, gives a sense of the texture shape, and color of these glaciers which are, we are told, in the simplest terms, super-packed snow which move down from the mountains.

After passing all of the beautiful scenery on our journey to and through the Johns Hopkins Inlet we sailed past this point which revealed our destination glacier. This scene gives a more panoramic view of all of the elements in play at this point in our voyage. To say that this filled our senses would certainly understate our experience.

A zoomed in image of this scene can be found in Alaska – Untitled #141. #141 gives a rather ethereal, airborne feel while in reality it is simply the beautiful engineering genius of the lens makers which brings us closer and draws us in.
